Easy Cascading Quilt
This quilt is easy to make, does not require matching seams and only needs to be trimmed after the top is sewn. The fat quarters do not need to be pre-trimmed.
Materials needed: 7 fat quarters (FQ) of coordinating colors with one being a focus fabric (this can be solid or print and the fabric that you want to showcase).
Instructions:
1. Stack the 7 fat quarters (FQ) right side of fabric up on top of each other with the focus fabric in the middle of the stack. Position the selvages so that they are at the top away from you. It is not necessary to trim the fat quarters to be the same size. See first photo.
2. Pick up the first FQ and sew it to the second FQ right sides together. Then sew the third FQ to the two FQs that you just sewed together, right sides together. Continue sewing the FQs until there are 7 FQs sewn into a long strip. Press the seams to one side.
3. Lay flat and fold this long strip of 7 fat quarters on itself about 4 times so that it fits on your cutting mat. Trim the selvage edge from the end of the long strip. Measure the width of the folded edge to make sure that after trimming the selvage off, that you can get 3 strips that are 6 ½” wide. You may cut these strips anywhere from 6” to 7” depending on the width of your shortest fat quarter. Make sure that all 3 strips are the same width.
4. Unfold each of the three long 6 1/2” strips and cut each one into three – 41” pieces, A, B, C.
5. Keep the A, B, C 41” pieces in order and sew them together as shown below.
7. There will now be three large blocks that are ready to sew together. Once the top is sewn together, trim the edges. Quilt top is approximately 42” by 54”.
